What made you want to
write this book?
The fact that the Torso Murderer killed at least twelve people, eluded the
legendary Eliot Ness, and then vanished without a trace is simply a captivating
bit of history. I decided to take what happened in real life and ask: what if
the killer returned today for one last act of vengeance? I thought that would
be a really fun and interesting story to write.
Where do you get your storylines from? The Company of Demons, and the thriller I am working on now, are both based on historical events that caught my attention. The stories develop by turning history in a bit of a different direction and wondering what might have then happened.
Was this book easier to write than others? The Company of Demons is my first novel, but it was easier to write than my current project.
Why? Demons is set in my hometown, and the courtroom scenes come naturally given my legal background. By contrast, my new book is a thriller set during the closing days of WWII. I wasn’t around in 1945 and I am creating a time and place that is unfamiliar to me. I have had to do a lot more research, and have travelled to some of the settings in the book to try and accurately portray them.
Do you only write one genre? Yes, under the broad umbrella of ‘thrillers’, but I don’t want to be thought of as only one specific type of thriller writer. Whereas Demons is a dark crime/legal thriller, my second book is more of an action/historical thriller.
Do you have a specific place or setting where you write? No, as long as I can be alone in a quiet place.
Describe what made you want to be a writer? Probably my love of reading. I have been wonderfully entertained since I was a kid by enjoying the books that others have written. Now, I want to entertain others by the stories that I tell.
