Favorite Hobby & Why???

2/26 Favorite Hobby and Why

I love to cook and rarely make the same thing twice.

I’m a retired librarian, yet I still love reviewing books and copy editing. Both are enjoyable challenges.

I also love music.

Can something that has been a profession still be a hobby? I’m not sure. For a great part of my life singing and performing is what I did. Now I’m retired, but I still haven’t left it behind by any means. Most of my performing is now done in a choral setting, but I still love to perform. So why do performers feel the need to be on that stage?

I’ve been married two times. This second marriage has lasted 37 years. But this husband, he didn’t know me as a musician and he isn’t a music fan other than to enjoy a few types of music now and then. It’s extremely hard to explain to a non-musician the need to perform. I’m sure at times it has seemed prima donna-ish, as if I desired or required attention, needed to show off. I could say I want to share my passion with others and make people smile.

I could say I enjoy the immense camaraderie

that exists among a group of people working for the same purpose. A group of people trying to speak the same language and note and rhythm at precisely the same time and volume together. I could say trying to read language, rhythm, notes and dynamics and watch a director together is very good for the brain.

So, I suppose I’ve explained the what and the why, haven’t I? I can’t stop, can’t stay away, love music, love to sing?

I’d say the "why" is all of the above. I hope you enjoy music no matter the medium nor the genre.

Earth Orbit

Earth Orbit: A Space Force Adventure by Merrin Slade

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My review...

Earth Orbit, Book 2 of a series titled “The Skye Sci-Fi Series" begins with Cerys visiting the family of her commanding officer who is her sweetheart. She’s a Space Force Officer now, but it doesn’t make one bit of difference to Jak’s stuffy prejudiced father. He’s hateful about imperfect Wild Types like Cerys who grew up in The Refuge, and he’s convinced her “kind” is beneath Jak. But after fighting her way through the Academy and being a hero in the Space Force wars, Cerys sure isn’t going to let an old biased buffoon shake her. Or at least she’s going to try and keep her chin up.

Merrin Slade seems to put you right in the future, but her futuresque gadgets and characters, all with unusual names, are clearly pronounceable in your mind making one’s reading smooth.

Ghosting Academy

It’s been years since Amelie abandoned her home to become an elite agent of the Academy.

In its embrace she has found support and stability, but in return the Academy uses her gifts for destruction and control. For ten years, she has chosen to live only for the moment, neither questioning nor considering the motives of her employer. But when Amelie and her pod of fellow agents, “graduate” into becoming strategic operatives, they are spirited off to an isolated island. Here they uncover a labyrinth of deception and lies far more sinister than any they ever imagined, including Verite, a new virtual reality game, in which time has no meaning and your blood holds the keys to your soul. In the Ghosting Academy, consciousness is currency, morality is shackles and there is no death.
