Earth Orbit

Earth Orbit: A Space Force Adventure by Merrin Slade

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My review...

Earth Orbit, Book 2 of a series titled “The Skye Sci-Fi Series" begins with Cerys visiting the family of her commanding officer who is her sweetheart. She’s a Space Force Officer now, but it doesn’t make one bit of difference to Jak’s stuffy prejudiced father. He’s hateful about imperfect Wild Types like Cerys who grew up in The Refuge, and he’s convinced her “kind” is beneath Jak. But after fighting her way through the Academy and being a hero in the Space Force wars, Cerys sure isn’t going to let an old biased buffoon shake her. Or at least she’s going to try and keep her chin up.

Merrin Slade seems to put you right in the future, but her futuresque gadgets and characters, all with unusual names, are clearly pronounceable in your mind making one’s reading smooth.

Ghosting Academy

It’s been years since Amelie abandoned her home to become an elite agent of the Academy.

In its embrace she has found support and stability, but in return the Academy uses her gifts for destruction and control. For ten years, she has chosen to live only for the moment, neither questioning nor considering the motives of her employer. But when Amelie and her pod of fellow agents, “graduate” into becoming strategic operatives, they are spirited off to an isolated island. Here they uncover a labyrinth of deception and lies far more sinister than any they ever imagined, including Verite, a new virtual reality game, in which time has no meaning and your blood holds the keys to your soul. In the Ghosting Academy, consciousness is currency, morality is shackles and there is no death.

These Are Not My Words

Echoing Chuck Palahniuk’s statement. “Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known,” this collection explores identity. These poems drift down rivers of old, using histories private and public and visit people that I love and loathe. Through heroes and villains, music and cartoons, literature and comics, science and wonder, and shadow and light, each poem canals the various channels of self and invention. As in the poem, “Credentials,” “I am a collage of memories and unicorn stickers…[by] those that have witnessed and been witnessed.”

Shocktober - tour and author interview

Mays’s spectacular catch in 1954, Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off homer in 1960, and Kirk Gibson’s pinch-hit blast in 1988 are just a few of the memorable moments that have dominated highlight reels. The outcome of the Series has not always been terribly surprising—especially during the late 1940s and early 1950s when the Yankees captured five consecutive championships, breaking their previous record of four straight titles from 1936 to 1939. But despite its predictability at times, the Fall Classic has taken many unexpected turns. The 1906 Cubs lost to the weak-hitting White Sox after establishing a new regular season record for

wins. The 1955 Dodgers avenged seven prior October failures with an improbable victory over the seemingly invincible Yankees. And in 1969, the Mets finally shed their image as “loveable losers,” dethroning the powerful Orioles. In more than a century of World Series plays, a number of similar scenarios have emerged; twenty-two of those stories are told in Shocktober.
