My Review...
Oh my, this was one of those very special books. This is the kind of book where you have a million things to do, yet you read and ignore them. Sharon Suskin tells the story of generation after generation of women beginning in the early 1900s. There are plenty of sad silences that were swallowed up in the life of the poor farm families. Lies women were afraid to tell as well as embarrassed to tell because of all the horrid rumors a small town could produce. It was also a time when young girls were sent away from home to care for another family’s children. This, in The Blue-eyed Butterfly, was a blessing for many of those girls.
This book has one technique that I’m not always fond of, but it sure worked here. Suskin tells her story of a family and their friends and extended family. As the generations change and years progress, she begins to write chapters where one point of view is by one generation and the continuing chapter by the next generation. This doesn’t begin until the summation of the book, and it seems to paint a picture or even pull things together for a beautiful ending. Maybe I should preface that by saying an incredibly beautiful and very sad story. A poignant, yet honest-seeming story that needs to be told and more importantly needs to be read. Kudos for a debut book.
