This is a great series with a great character. I often continue to read a series because of the character. This one is named Michael McLaren. He’s a good man who’s caring, a little moody now and then, and always fair. He seems to have an instinct for plotting the steps a killer took. He somehow knows to look in the right places. He’s also in love with his new wife Melanie. And this time, it’s Melanie who can’t let go of a hunch. Why would someone hide a photo and an article inside a wall? It sure wasn’t what she expected to find when she was remodeling. She was sure she could talk Mike into following it up, and of course, being the beautiful love of his life, she could. What he found was not just one story, not just one murder.
Before I even begin to describe the fun of reading this mystery, let me say that Hiestand had me stumped right to the very end. I’ve read more of her books, and her stories always make you work hard to try and figure out the culprit. It’s often not possible until it begins to creep up on you at the end, but this time I had several murderer candidates lined up and still wasn’t right.
Hiestand seems to be able to wrap you up in a murder mystery and keep you reading till the end. She has included good friends of this series in the story, but there never seems to be a time you can’t understand their interactions and interplay in the current book you are reading. There are never any innuendoes you can’t understand, never any side jokes that leave you wondering what you missed before. I’m afraid I can’t even explain how she does this, but every book can be read as a stand-alone.
In summary, the best word I can find to describe this book is WOW.
