Imagine signing for a FedEx package early tomorrow morning. As you open the contents, you discover a journal from your father. In his handwriting, you read entries that share with you stories from his life, moments of your childhood, and written conversations between the two of you captured on pages for you to cherish. You would be slow to put this book down as memories flood back into your mind. Many will make you smile, and all will draw your attention to the gift that your dad has been in your life. This journal is the beginning of such a treasure that will bond a father and child together and leave a forever cherished gift.
When I read
this my first thought was to give it as a gift to my grandson. But then, my
second thought was “oh how much I wish my own father had thought to do this.”
I’m not sure
he would have though. This book is not for every dad. It does have an
encouragement type of statement every so many pages followed by lines or pages
of room for writing. There are statements from Patton, Walter Payton, Vince
Lombardi, etc. It’s a self-help book with cheerleaders.
However,
dads are of a different generation today. They help more with the children;
they express feelings more. I think the most important thing to keep in mind is
the legacy you can leave for your children, they can have memories of you, but you
can also leave them memories of the family, their mother, and their childhood.
Pretty well invaluable.
